BEYOND XP 5000 PLASTIC BACKED ADULT BRIEFS FULL REVIEW

SIZING

The Beyond XP 5000 Diaper comes in three sizes:

    •Medium 31” to 44” waist or hip

    •Large 44” to 58” waist or hip

    •X-Large 56” to 64” waist or hip

The fit of the Beyond XP5000 diaper gets a “good” rating due to the fact that they are a little snug in fit.  I wear a large, as I have a 40” waist and prefer the larger fit of a large diaper, and I prefer the x-large in the Beyond XP5000, as the large does not come up very high on the waist and the tabs are pretty snug at the end of the fastening zone.  It DOES fit, just a bit snug.  The leg openings are large enough, but a bit snug on the large.

CONSTRUCTION

The Beyond XP5000 Brief has a white plastic outer covering.  The wetness indicator is printed so light that you almost don’t notice it which, as far as I am concerned is a great thing!  The usable capacity of this diaper is SO high that the liquid soluble wetness indicator vanishes before full usable capacity is reached.  The wetness indicator is very faint though, and really should not be visible under a pair of thin white pants or shorts.  There are two hook and loop type tabs on each side.  You read right!  Hook and loop tabs on a plastic backed diaper!  We have seen this before in the Active Ultra Plus, which is no longer available.  The tabs fasten to a landing zone that is flexible and soft enough to not cause chafing of the skin, as other more rigid plastic landing zones can.  You can unfasten and refasten these tabs over and over and over again and they work great!  The ends of the tabs can be a bit tricky to grasp off of the landing zone and probably should be a bit larger for those with limited dexterity.  The tabs are VERY strong and DO NOT slip at all.  I can wear JUST this diaper with nothing over it at night and the fastening tabs never move!  The XP5000 diaper has very tall and effective standing inner leak barriers.  They are probably one of the most moisture resistant standing inner leak barriers of any product on the market at this point.  They are also INCREDIBLY effective at containing bowel movements!  The XP5000 diaper has an elastic waistband in the back AND in the front!  It is a tall waistband that does not chafe or bind against the skin.  It is very effective at keeping the waistband of the diaper from rolling down.

Plastic Backing

The plastic backing on these briefs is very strong.  This plastic does NOT stretch at all when you move.  I have seen no evidence of any kind of pinhole or plastic weakness AT ALL, and judging by the quality of this brief, I don’t think I ever will.  The plastic backing is actually relatively quiet for as strong as it is!  If you were wearing this diaper under jeans, no one would ever know it was there.  Under a pair of sweat pants, there may be some noise.

Elastic Waist and Leg Bands

The elastic at the leg openings is VERY effective at giving a snug fit around the legs and in the leg creases.  They may be a little too snug, causing you to need to size up, but the sizing overlaps enough that this is really not an issue.  You should not fasten the bottom tabs of this product TOO tight though, as you will hurt its’ performance, as the leg gathers should flex and move with you to keep a good seal.  If you fasten the lower tapes too tight, the diaper tends to cut into the skin around the legs as well.  My experience with the elastics is that if taped comfortably snug but not tight, they protect INCREDIBLY.

Standing Inner Leak Barriers

The standing inner leakage barriers on this product are incredibly effective.  Really they are more for bowel containment than urine, as the padding absorbs SO fast that there is no need for them.  They come up better than 3/4 of the way in both the front AND back, giving excellent protection against leakage..  As noted above.

Padding Size, Shape and Thickness

The padding shape on this diaper is the “figure 8” shape with very little padding out toward the wings.  Now, with the speed of absorbency of this product and the incredible standing inner leak barriers, excess padding in the wings is really not needed.  While the padding does not wrap all the way around the sides, it comes far enough past the elastic in the front and back to catch any wetness or stool that might get past the standing inner leak barrier.  The padding that extends out toward the wings in the front is about 1” to 2” narrower than it is in the back.  This allows a good, less bulky fit but still gives enough padding to make this a very protective product.

The padding on this product is fairly bulky and seems to be made primarily of super absorbent polymer with a paper pulp layer on the skin side of the diaper.  Strangely, the padding does not swell like crazy, as many diapers primarily made of polymer do.  Even with the HIGH polymer content of this diaper, you do not feel bumps on the outside of the plastic and don’t experience “pinholes” caused by the polymer granules, like you do with other brands.  Under everyday clothing, this product would not be obvious while dry, other than an occasional plastic crinkle that you might be able to muffle by wearing a pair of tight fitting underwear over the diaper.  The padding absorbs VERY quickly!  One slight downside is that the padding does not wick quite as well as products like the Northshore Supreme, Northshore AirSupreme, Molicare Slip Maxi, etc..    This said, they do eventually wick toward the back, but by that time, they are SO wet that you want to change.  The padding does swell to about 1.5 to maybe 2 times its‘ dry thickness when soaked, so visibility under clothing is not a real issue.  Even with the swelling of the padding and INCREDIBLE amount this diaper absorbs, the plastic backing stays strong and the hook and loop tabs continue to hold well, even when the diaper is totally saturated.

For those who are wondering about padding bunching up...the padding on this diaper does tend to bunch up a little when it’s not very wet.  I attribute this to the dry polymer surrounding the wet area trying to absorb from the wet polymer.  The wetter the XP5000 diaper gets, the less the padding bunches/breaks up.  It’s kind of hard to explain, but the protection this diaper offers is never compromised!     The construction of the padding and amount of polymer keep the padding in place.  I have not had padding quality problems either overnight/in my wheelchair or walking in my braces.  It never just falls down into the crotch like many other brands have problems with.

Single Layer Hook and Loop Tabs

Yes, you read that correctly HOOK AND LOOP TABS on a PLASTIC BACKED DIAPER!  The last time we saw this feature, was on the Provider's Choice Active Ultra and Active Ultra Plus diaper.  These hook and loop tabs are sized well and hold VERY well to the tab landing zone.  They do not slide or stretch, so the diaper stays very well fastened.  I think they could us a grasping point at the end to make them easier to unfasten, but it really is not that big of a deal.

QUALITY

OK, on the size medium and large, the quality is EXCELLENT!  Padding is consistent, hook and loop tabs work well, etc...  On the x-large size (at least the first run..haven't tried them recently) the quality was pretty rough.  The x-large size had padding outside of where it should be, inconsistency in padding thickness/polymer distribution and hook and loop tabs that would just tear off in your hand as you were trying to put the diaper on.  I almost wonder if the factory had never made an x-large before and their equipment was just not calibrated correctly.  I will update this review as more runs of the x-large come through and I see if quality and consistency in the x-large size improves to where the medium and large are.

APPEARANCE

The XP5000 diaper is all white, with the words XP5000 printed in vertical lines on the diaper backing.  Generally, even under thin pants, it should not be a visibility issue.  The wetness indicator is faint enough that it should not be visible under even thin white pants or shorts.  So overall, appearance is decent.

COMFORT

The Beyond XP5000 diaper is comfortable when put on dry AND when extremely wet!  The lining on the inside is very soft to the touch and the standing inner leak barriers, while tall, are soft and pliable and do not chafe.  The hook and loop tabs hold very well, so there should be no sagging or looseness as the diaper becomes wet.  There is an elastic waistband that helps hold the diaper up and improve fit.  Overall comfort is fantastic until this diaper is way beyond wet and well past time to change.

VALUE FOR THE PRICE

For the performance of this diaper, the price is VERY worth it!  The prices run from $1.64 to $1.91 per per diaper, depending on what size you buy.  This is well in line with other premium diapers on the market.  They are definitely worth a try!  Please drop us an email and let us know what you think of this product and our review.
