MOLICARE SLIP MAXI ADULT BRIEFS FULL REVIEW

SIZING

The Molicare Slip Maxi Diaper comes in three sizes:

    •Small 20” to 31” waist or hip

    •Medium 32” to 47” waist or hip

    •Large 47” to 59” waist or hip

The Molicare Maxi Slip is the same as the Molicare Super Plus, with one defining difference. The diaper is now robin's egg blue, NOT purple, as it used to be. The fit of the Molicare Maxi Slip gets an “average” rating due to the fact that they do not fit well (if at all) at the larger end of their size listing.  The medium, for example, will fit up to a 42” waist or hip at MOST and at that, the fit is quite snug.  So, if you take off 4” to 5” off the larger end of the fit specifications, you have a more accurate listing of the largest waist or hip size they will fit.

CONSTRUCTION

The Molicare Slip Maxi has a robin's egg blue plastic outer covering with navy blue “pinstripes” down the left and right side.  These “pinstripes” are used as a fit guide.  They have a printed wetness indicator, that is printed in liquid soluble ink that disappears when the diaper gets wet to indicate a need for a change.   There are two dual layer adhesive tapes on each side.  The dual layer tapes have a blue tape that attaches to the plastic backing of the diaper with a white tape tab on top of it.  When you need to unfasten and refasten the tape, you pull up on the white tape leaving the blue one behind.  When you want to refasten the tape, you put the white tape right back on the blue tape and you have the same fit as you did when you first put them on!  The Maxi Slip also has very effective standing inner leak barriers on each side and elastic at the legs for leakage containment and comfortable fit.  There is no elastic waist band at all.

Plastic Backing

The plastic backing on these briefs is very strong.  A good (or bad, depending on your view) feature of this plastic backing is it is made to stretch so that it moves with you when you move and does not tear.  The downside is that this tends to make the tapes grip the plastic a little less strong than most wearers would like.  This diaper has NEVER suffered with the “pinhole” issue in the plastic backing at all!  The plastic backing is actually very quiet under everyday pants so concealment in regards to noise is generally not an issue.

Elastic Leg Bands

As previously noted, this diaper does not have an elastic waist band at all.  The elastic at the leg openings is VERY effective at giving a snug fit around the legs and in the leg creases, but if the tapes are taped tight enough, it can tend to bind or cut into the skin. My experience with the elastics is they will tend to “roll up” and this leads to chafing, binding and sometimes cutting of the skin.  Usually, if this happens, you really should go to the next size up if you can not fasten the tapes on the size you usually wear any more loosely.  This is why this product received an “average” in the fit department as well.  If the lower tape is fastened comfortably snug though, the elastic will flex as you move, keeping the diaper snug against your skin without allowing leakage.

Standing Inner Leak Barriers

The standing inner leakage barriers on this product are very effective.  They come about 1/2 of the way up the front and about 1/2 way or so up the back of the diaper on each side.  The lower height in the front MAY pose a problem for some men in regards to wetness getting past the leak barriers and traveling around the sides of the diaper on occasion.  While not the tallest inner leakage barriers on the market they are more than effective at preventing urine and especially bowel leakage.

Padding Size, Shape and Thickness

The padding shape on this diaper is the “figure 8” shape with padding out toward the wings in the back and front, as you can see from the picture above.  While the padding does not wrap all the way around the sides, it comes far enough past the elastic in the front and back to catch any wetness that MAY get past the standing elastic leak barrier, with the possible exception for some men as noted up in the Standing Inner Leak Barriers section.  The padding that extends out toward the wings in the front is about 4” narrower than it is in the back.  This allows a good, less bulky fit but still gives enough padding to make this a very protective product.

The padding on this product is not all that bulky for it's absorbency. The padding is just a little thinner than the padding on the Abena X-Plus Brief, and about half the thickness of the padding on the Dry 24/7 Briefs.  Under everyday clothing, this product would not be obvious, other than MAYBE an occasional plastic crinkle that could be muffled with a pair of boxers over them. The padding seems to absorb very quickly and wick very well.  Usually, you can utilize every inch of the padding in regards to wetness without a leak.  This diaper is DEFINITELY an excellent choice for heavy overnight protection, especially for women!  If taped snugly, this diaper will rarely ever leak even when you sleep on your side.

Dual Layer Refastenable Tape Tabs

As noted above, these diapers have the two piece refastenable tape system, with the blue “under tape” that fastens to the plastic backing and the white top tape that adheres to the blue tape and is used for unfastening and refastening.  Molicare uses a reasonably large tape tab with VERY good folded over ends that make the tape easy to grasp when fastening and unfastening.  The tapes could hold a bit better, if the manufacturer would use a different adhesive or plastic backing.  They can tend to slide out of place if you tape the diaper on super snug or if you are a very active person.  They usually will not pop off but can tend to slide.  This can usually be minimized or eliminated by wearing a pair of underwear over the brief.  The white tape can be unfastened from the blue one and refastened on the blue tape over and over again without any noticeable degradation in stickiness.  The white tab can also be refastened on other ares of the brief where the blue tab is NOT, but then the white tab is no longer refastenable and may rip the plastic backing if unfastened.

QUALITY

The quality of the Molicare Maxi Slip is unmatched by ANY other adult diaper manufacturer that I have ever seen!  The defect rate for Molicare Maxi Slip Briefs MAY be as high as 2% to 3% which is almost unheard of low in todays’ time of high speed manufacturing.  The product is made in Germany, which should pretty well say it all when it comes to quality and quality control.  I have not found any manufacturer that even comes close to Molicare in the quality department!

APPEARANCE

OK, here’s where the Molicare Maxi Slip falls short...the appearance department.  The product, as you can see in the picture above, is ROBIN'S EGG BLUE! Really??  I know this is Hartmann’s (the manufacturer) trademark for this product, but other than that, there is no reason for the blue color.  If you’re wearing a pair of thin white pants or shorts, the blue color and navy blue pinstripes may show through them.  If the color of your diaper doesn’t bother you, then I wouldn’t worry about it.

COMFORT

If you like a super tight fitting diaper, you may find these uncomfortable due to the binding and chafing of the leg elastics as mentioned above and the (usually upper) tapes that slide and cause the product to fit much more loosely than when you put it on.  If like me, you prefer a comfortably snug but not tight fit, then this product is incredibly comfortable and works very well.

VALUE FOR THE PRICE

Depending on the company you buy from and the size you buy, this diaper can run anywhere from $1.20 to $2.00 per diaper!  Over the last several years, the Molicare Super Plus has really shot up in price in comparison to other premium imported adult diapers. The Molicare Maxi Slip is no different.  The trade-off though, is that for that price you are getting an EXTREMELY well made and EXTREMELY high quality diaper that works exceedingly well!  Do I think this product is worth that kind of price?  For the peace of mind it gives me in leakage and odor control protection...absolutely!  This is a diaper you should definitely try!
